Software Engineering

Washington, DC, USA

Posted on Jul 23, 2026

Actionfigure builds real-time transportation information, journey planning and analytics software for workplaces, universities, real estate buildings, and transit agencies. You may have seen our TransitScreen product in a stadium or building lobby. It's one way we help people get around cities more easily, with less traffic and pollution.

We're looking for a full-stack software engineer to join our small team. You'll work on projects for major customers, and your work will affect hundreds of thousands of commuters every day.

This role can be done remotely from anywhere in the US. We also have an office in Washington, DC. If you can work from there part of the week, you'll get faster onboarding and more time with the team, and that will count in your favor. But it's not required.

You'll work across our whole stack, from frontend to backend. You'll be comfortable digging into our codebase and figuring things out. Maybe you like building features start-to-finish and want to grow into a software architect role. Or maybe you're strong on frontend and want to learn more about the operational side of software, like CI/CD and cloud infrastructure. Either path works here.

What we value:

  • Care about simplicity. Look for the cleanest solution, not just the fastest one.
  • Notice patterns that already exist in our codebase and use them, but keep looking for better ones.
  • Be the person who tracks down a hard bug and fixes it when others can’t
  • Enjoy learning new tools, AI tools, and ways of building software
  • Push yourself to grow your skills and your impact on the team

How you communicate:

  • You like working with other engineers and explaining what you built
  • You communicate clearly. You know what context people need, and you include links or screenshots to make things easier for your colleagues.
  • You document your work, or you automate it so the knowledge doesn't disappear

Experience we're looking for:

  • Built full web applications, ideally in React
  • Designed and built APIs, ideally in Node.js with GraphQL
  • AWS experience (certification a plus)

Nice to have:

  • Strong interest in some aspect of transportation - public transit, aviation, pedestrian safety…
  • Container orchestration (Kubernetes preferred)
  • Infrastructure as code (Terraform, DNS, routing)
  • Authentication and authorization (OAuth2, OIDC, JWT)
  • CI/CD and GitOps (GitHub Actions, ArgoCD preferred)

Why people like working here:

  • We give you room to do your best work
  • We invest in your career growth
  • We give you autonomy, but you'll also get coaching and support
  • Your work will have a real, visible impact on our products and the company
  • We talk openly about problems and solve them together
  • We're mission-driven. We believe our work makes cities better.

Salary and Benefits:

  • Health Benefits (Medical, Dental, Vision)
  • Stock Options
  • Free Capital Bikeshare, pre-tax Metro, and a walking benefit
  • Flexible vacation policy, plus all major federal holidays off
  • Company closes for a full week between Christmas and New Year's Day
