About the Role

Are you ready to start a new journey with a team of energized professionals advancing and connecting the world's infrastructure? Bentley is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to help design, build, and operate the cloud services behind SYNCHRO.

A core part of this work is schedule synchronization. Construction schedules are large, densely interconnected graphs of tasks and dependencies, edited concurrently by multiple people across desktop and cloud, and often exchanged with external planning tools. Keeping them consistent - reconciling concurrent changes, preserving intent, and doing it reliably and fast at real-world scale - is one of the more interesting distributed-systems problems in our domain. This is a senior role, and we mean it. You will own significant parts of our backend architecture end to end - from shaping requirements with product, through design and implementation, to running services in production. You will make technical decisions that outlive individual features, raise the engineering standard around you, and help others on the team grow.

Responsibilities:

• Schedule Synchronization: Design and build the services that keep schedule data consistent across clients and the cloud - handling concurrency, conflict resolution, and data integrity at scale.

• Architecture & System Design: Lead the design of backend services and APIs, with a focus on scalability, resilience, security, and maintainability. Make and document decisions with clear trade-offs.

• Implementation: Build and evolve cloud microservices in C# and modern .NET (10+), using ASP.NET Core and Azure platform services.

• Data: Design and optimize relational data models and queries; make deliberate choices about data access, caching, and consistency.

• Production Ownership: Operate what you build - instrumentation, monitoring, alerting, diagnosing and resolving production issues.

• Performance & Reliability: Profile and optimize services for throughput, latency, and cost; design for failure and graceful degradation.

• Testing: Drive a strong automated testing culture - unit, integration, and contract tests - and hold the bar in review.

• CI/CD & DevOps: Build and improve fully automated pipelines to production; follow DevOps practices from design through delivery.

• Security: Apply secure development practices - authentication and authorization, secrets management, and dependency hygiene.

• Technical Leadership: Mentor engineers, lead code and design reviews, and help set standards across the team.

• Collaboration: Work effectively with product managers, frontend and desktop engineers, QA, and the teams whose services we consume or who depend on ours.

Qualifications:

• Substantial professional experience (typically 5+ years) building backend systems in C#, including modern .NET (8/9/10).

• Strong experience with ASP.NET Core and designing well-structured HTTP APIs.

• Proven experience designing, deploying, and operating cloud microservices in production.

• Hands-on experience with a major cloud provider - Azure strongly preferred (e.g. Azure Functions, Azure Storage, Application Insights, Azure Batch).

• Experience with concurrency, data consistency, or conflict resolution in distributed systems - or a clear appetite to work on it.

• Strong relational database skills, including schema design and query performance - MSSQL/Azure SQL preferred.

• Practical experience with data access using EF Core and/or Dapper, and a clear view on when each fits.

• Experience with message-based and event-driven architectures, and with patterns such as CQRS and mediator.

• A test-driven mindset and a track record of building maintainable, well-tested systems.

• Solid CI/CD experience and comfort owning delivery all the way to production.

• Proficiency with Git and modern branching / review workflows.

• Understanding of the short- and long-term implications of technical decisions, and pragmatism about when to refactor and when to ship.

• Clear verbal and written communication skills, including with non-engineering stakeholders.

• Self-driven mindset with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively, and to mentor others.

Nice to Have

• Docker and Kubernetes, and experience running containerized workloads.

• PostgreSQL experience alongside SQL Server.

• Applied security experience - threat modelling, secure design reviews, or working to a security standard.

• Exposure to C++ or willingness to work across a C++/.NET boundary.

• Experience with Azure DevOps.

• Experience working in Scrum / Agile environments at scale.
