POSITION DESCRIPTION:
We are looking for a Director, Energy Policy and Partnership to join our Grid & Energy Services (G&ES) team to lead policy strategy, regulatory engagement, and external partnerships that expand electricity infrastructure and enable sustainable energy solutions. This role drives policy and advocacy initiatives supporting data center energy, distributed energy resources, and grid services while informing evolving AI and energy regulations in the U.S. and globally.
The ideal candidate will bring deep experience in energy policy, regulatory affairs, and utility market structures, and will work closely with internal business, regulatory, market, and infrastructure teams as well as external stakeholders. This position is remote, with preference for candidates based in California or the East Coast.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead regulatory and policy positioning with regional, national, and sub-national electric power regulators, utilities, and grid operators
- Develop and execute policy and advocacy strategies that support electricity infrastructure expansion, grid services, and data center sustainability
- Drive DER (behind-the-meter and front-of-meter) grid services strategy across storage, solar, and demand response programs
- Advocate for market rule modernization and regulatory frameworks that enable grid-enhancing technologies
- Partner with utilities on innovative tariff structures, PPAs, and interconnection agreements for energy and data center projects
- Provide internal subject matter expertise on policy risks and opportunities impacting long-term infrastructure and market expansion
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Real Estate, Procurement, Construction, Operations, and commercial teams to align energy strategy with policy frameworks
- Build and maintain relationships with external organizations and industry groups; represent the company in policy forums and working groups
- Draft and contribute to formal policy submissions, white papers, and industry publications
- Manage and coordinate work delivered by external counsel and policy consultants
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 7–10+ years of experience in the utility or energy industry, with focus on regulatory affairs, energy policy, or commercial/business development
- Strong knowledge of electric grid infrastructure, including transmission, distribution, substations, and grid interconnection processes
- Working knowledge of distributed energy resources and DER management systems (DERMS)
- Demonstrated experience influencing regional or national energy policy outcomes
- Experience negotiating complex power contracts, tariffs, and interconnection agreements
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, economics, public policy, or a related technical or policy field
- Strong stakeholder communication and external advocacy skills
- Travel may be required up to 30%, depending on business needs.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with FERC orders (such as Orders 1920 and 2023) and RTO/ISO market structures
- Deep knowledge of demand response, energy storage, and AI-driven grid optimization
- Experience supporting large-scale infrastructure or data center energy projects
- Background working with government agencies, regulators, or industry associations
- Solar or renewable energy industry experience

The salary range is required by the California Pay Transparency Act and may differ depending on the location of those candidates hired nationwide. Actual compensation is influenced by a wide array of factors including but not limited to, skill set, education, licenses and certifications, essential job duties and requirements, and the necessary experience relative to the job’s minimum qualifications.
